Targets

Road casualty figures within the West of Scotland Forum area have dropped to their lowest level for three decades.

This encouraging statistic is the result of improved safety features in vehicles, advances in health care, new and improved road traffic legislation and the extensive work carried out by road safety organisations and individuals. All of these initiatives have a significant part to play in reducing road traffic casualties.

Nevertheless, in 2005 some 91 people lost their lives and a further 883 were left seriously injured, as a result of incidents on roads in the Forum area. The tragic consequences of these incidents affect many people - family, friends and communities alike.

In a bid to reduce casualty numbers even further the Government has established a 10-year road safety target, to be achieved by the year 2010.

The West of Scotland Road Safety Forum is working hard to achieve the Government casualty reduction targets of:

  • a 40 per cent reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured in road crashes
  • a 50 per cent reduction in the number of children killed or seriously injured
  • a 10 per cent reduction in the slight casualty rate

All statistics will take traffic growth into account.
