Targets and Statistics

In the ten year period to December 2010 road traffic casualties have fallen considerably in the West of Scotland. Click here to view the latest report. However tough new targets included in Scotland's Road Safety Framework to 2020* set out by the Scottish Government leave little room for complacency.

These targets are expected reductions against 2004 - 2008 average casualty figures in each area;

  • People killed - a 30% reduction by 2015 / 40% reduction by 2020
  • People seriously injured - a 43% reduction by 2015 / 55% reduction by 2020
  • Children aged under 16 years killed - a 35% by 2015 / 50% reduction by 2020
  • Children aged under 16 years seriously injured - a 50% reduction by 2015 / 65% reduction by 2020
  • Slight casualties (per kilometres of vehicle travel) - a 10% reduction by 2020

2011 also marks the launch of the World Health Organisation's Decade of Action for Road Safety Initiative which aims to save 5 million lives worldwide over the next 10 years and which is fully supported by Road Safety West of Scotland.
