Staying Safe on your Bike

Get advice from a reputable dealer on the most suitable bike for the type of riding you plan to do. It should be fitted with a bell and reflectors - it's the law - and you should always wear a properly fitting helmet which you should replace immediately if it gets a knock. Wear bright clothing to help other road users see you. It is also a good idea to add reflective strips to your bike and the clothing you wear when riding at night.

Stay alert to what's happening around you. In particular, look out for pedestrians stepping off the kerb, other vehicles pulling over towards the kerb or vehicles coming out of side streets. Practice looking behind you without wobbling or swerving, and always signal clearly before turning or stopping so that other road users are fully aware of your intentions.

Use cycle lanes as much as possible. On the road, always allow at least a full door's width between you and parked cars.

Use the advanced stop lines at traffic lights. Some bus lanes, allow motorcycles and taxis to use the lane as well as buses. Be aware that vehicles may suddenly turn across the bus lane ahead of you.
Never cycle along the left side of high sided vehicles like lorries, buses and coaches as you could become invisible in their 'blind spots'. Be extra careful when a large vehicle is stopped at a junction, and make sure you are in a position where the driver can see you clearly, as it may be turning across your path.
