Older Pedestrians

The proportion of Scotland's population aged over 60 is increasing year by year, with the largest percentage rise amongst those aged 80 or over. People at this time of life tend to make more journeys on foot than as drivers, especially in urban areas, and this means a greater number of older pedestrians being at risk on our roads especially when crossing.

Statistics clearly show that the risks increase steadily as you get older, and there are many reasons for this. Advancing age will inevitably bring varying degrees of physical frailty, perhaps resulting in a general slowing down with loss of mobility allied to sensory impairment including deterioration in both eyesight and hearing.

You can help keep yourself safe when out and about by,

  • Giving yourself plenty of time to cross the road. Don't try to walk quicker than normal or you could trip and fall.
  • Never be afraid to ask if you need help crossing the road.
  • If you wear glasses or a hearing aid at home, always use them when you go out.
