South Ayrshire Council are working in partnership with Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership (SSCP) to highlight to new young drivers, and those about to learn to drive, the importance of not exceeding speed limits.
Every secondary school in South Ayrshire is being provided with a DVD that contains information, in the form of a 40 second commercial, that will be played on school plasma screens.
Ayr Academy was one of the first schools to receive the DVD and they invited Councillor Peter Convery, the Council’s Portfolio Carrier for Sustainability and Environment and Neil Macgillivrary from SSCP to join a group of students to watch it.
Councillor Peter Convery said: “Anyone who gets 6 penalty points on their driving licence within two years of obtaining it has their licence revoked, this happened to 20,000 new drivers in 2007.
“The safety of drivers, their passengers and other road users is of paramount importance, and that is why people should stick to the speed limits, they are there for a reason. Learning to drive takes a lot of time and money, so to throw it all away by breaking speed limits is just senseless.
“The DVD is a great educational tool, that gets across an important message in a simple yet effective way.”
After seeing the plasma screen in action and meeting a group of students
Neil Macgillivray of the Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership said: "Young drivers are often tempted to speed when their friends are in the car so it is important that passengers also heed the message to be responsible and not be egging the driver on to take risks".
