Experienced Drivers

Whether it is 5 years or 35 years experience driving on the road, the learning process never ends. As your skills develop you can also become a more efficient driver, which will mean your journeys will be more comfortable, your awareness and anticipation will be greatly enhanced and you will considerably reduce your fuel bills.

Ecodriving is a proven style of driving that contributes to road safety and helps reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

Some tips to help develop your Ecodriving technique.

  • Check your revs. Change up before 2500 rpm (petrol) 2000 rpm (diesel)
  • As soon as conditions allow use the highest gear possible without the engine having to struggle
  • Anticipate road conditions and avoid sharp acceleration and late braking
  • Block gear changing (missing intermediate gears out) will reduce the amount of time you are accelerating. It is not necessary to change up or down every gear
  • Using cruise control if fitted will keep a steady setting on the accelerator and not fluctuate as much as your foot, therefore using less fuel
  • Using Air Conditioning increase fuel consumption (although you have to use the system occasionally to prevent bacteria building up inside)
  • Drive away immediately when starting from cold - idling engines waste fuel and can cause rapid engine wear.
  • Remove a roof rack as the drag from it increases fuel consumption
  • Check tyre pressures regularly. Under inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by up to 4%, and can affect vehicle stability.
  • Always reverse into a parking space so you can drive out of it, as a cold engine manoeuvring a low speed will use more fuel.
