Effects - Crash Reduction and offender reduction
Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership monitors the incidence of crashes at all safety camera sites throughout the West of Scotland to ensure that the cameras continue to make a positive contribution to road safety.
Road crash statistics are usually analysed on a three-yearly basis to give a more accurate picture and to avoid being skewed by single events. The following tables illustrate the personal injury crashes at safety camera sites from a baseline of three years data before any safety camera enforcement took place. The chart shows the number of crashes in the three-year period immediately after commencement of camera operation ie the effect of introducing the cameras, then again in the most recent three years, bringing the figures more up to date.
While it would not be claimed that these reductions were solely due to cameras, it is clear that there has been a significant beneficial effect at these locations where deterrence takes place.
The drop in number of crashes can be seen to be higher for fatal and serious injury crashes which highlights the role of speed in the most damaging crashes.

Prevention is the aim
With publication of all our safety camera sites, warning signage, highly visible cameras and vans, our aim is encourage drivers to obey speed limits and traffic signals.
Offender numbers at camera sites have fallen by almost 80% over the past six years which shows that drivers are heeding the message to take care.
