Drivers And Passengers

Driving is a fun and exciting way to travel, and at times nerve racking. Being a driver opens up a world of adventure, whether it is for pleasure or a necessity for work. From day one as a learner until the day you hand back your licence, the one constant thread is you never stop learning throughout this experience.

There can be a downside and one is the fact that new drivers aged 17-24 represent less than 10% of all UK licence holders but are disproportionately represented in casualty statistics. This reflects our own experience of young driver deaths and serious injuries here in the West of Scotland.

Passengers

We all have a responsibility for our actions towards drivers of all ages. In many collisions passengers are all too often the innocent victims who come off worse.

So if you are a regular passenger in cars, with drivers of varying skill levels, here are some tips to help keep you safe and perhaps even save your life.

  • Always wear a seatbelt, both in the front and in the back, no matter how short the journey.
  • Never get into a car with a driver who you suspect might have been drinking or taking drugs.
  • Refuse to travel in overloaded cars carrying more passengers than it was designed for.
  • Don't give into peer pressure to do what you know is wrong and put yourself at risk.
  • If you are uneasy about the way the driver is driving, tell them to stop and let you out so you can find your own way home by other means.
  • Always keep enough money aside, to pay for a taxi home, for any length of journey, at any time of day or night.
