Distraction Tips

Here are just a few tips on how to avoid some of the most common distractions and stay safe every trip.

  • Turn your mobile off when driving. Not only is using a hand held mobile illegal, but talking on your phone - or, even worse, texting - makes you four times more likely to be involved in a crash.
  • Don't smoke. Just think of all the potential distractions involved in lighting up and smoking when driving - getting the cigarette out of the packet, manoeuvring the car's cigarette lighter in and out of its socket, smoke drifting into your eye, hot ash or a half finished cigarette falling onto your lap.
  • Where possible, avoid getting involved in lengthy conversations with your passengers, especially with those in the back as your natural instinct will always be to turn your head when talking to them. Arguments can be particularly distracting - so pull over and don't drive off again until you've calmed down!
  • Music can be a serious distraction too, whether searching for the right track or playing it too loud which can block out the sound of what's happening around you and therefore reduce awareness. Certain styles of music can also impact on your driving - a high energy rock or dance track, for example, can make you drive faster without realising it.
