Country Roads

YOU'RE NEVER ALONE ON A COUNTRY ROAD...

Country roads can be killers ... and there are some really shocking statistics to prove it.

Did you know, for example, that 3 out of every 4 fatalities in Scotland happen on country roads or that 5 people are killed or injured on country roads every single day in the Strathclyde area alone?

That's why the West of Scotland Road Safety Forum is launching a new campaign to highlight the dangers of driving on country roads. This initiative directly addresses the problem that too many drivers regard relatively traffic free country roads to be a comparatively safe place to drive - whereas nothing could be further from the truth.

There is simply no place for complacency behind the wheel on a country where unpredictable hazards could be waiting for you around every bend - stray animals, a stationary tractor, unexpected flooding that might cause you to skid and lose control.

One of the main messages of the campaign is that you don't have to be speeding to be driving too fast. The key to keeping you and your passengers safe from harm is always to drive at an appropriate speed for the conditions - or better still, even slower - to make sure you have enough time to react to whatever hazard may suddenly come your way.

So the message is clear - stay alert to stay safe and make sure your next trip along a country road won't be your last.

Congratulations to Dominique Davidson from Kilmarnock.
