British Horse Society Road Test Riding and road safety
Horse riding off-road is a very popular pastime but by necessity
riders sometimes have to use the road - perhaps to reach off-road
routes, training establishments or to move horses between
fields.
To help them become responsible, competent, safe and courteous
road users, the British Horse Society [BHS] encourages
riders to take their Riding and Road Safety Test.
Training for the test involves:
- a
minimum of six hours supervised by a BHS registered instructor
- theory
work
- off-road
and on-road practical sessions
- homework
The
test is administered and co-ordinated by the BHS and accredited
BHS examiners and road safety officers ensure riders come
up to the required standard.
The training and testing is rigorous to ensure that riders:
- can
keep themselves safe when out on the road
- are
in control of their horse
- are
aware of other road users
- an understanding to a knowledge of the Highway Code
- are
aware of and obey the law
- fully
understand the BHS Riding and Road Craft Manual
- wear
appropriate clothing
The
riding and road safety test is available to all riders between
the ages of 12 and 70.
Details of local training, tests, current approved standards
